MOTHER NATURE CHALLENGES NICC

We have talked about it for several years now. What if we don’t have ice for our annual fishing derby? Well, Mother Nature presented us with a challenge this year with no ice. But even Mother Nature couldn’t dampen the spirit and dedication of NICC members, fishermen and those who attended the two day event. It was a success considering the unseasonable weather.

The team that organized the event included: Ken and Laura Golonka, Bonnie and Don Letich, Dale Miller, Mary & Bob Humpa, Marguerite O’Connell, Mike Venet, Ross Musumeci and Ron Salee.

The officers, directors and members of N.I.C.C. would like to thank the Thirsty Turtle for their continued support. They obtained the event permits and put extra personnel on duty for our yearly fundraiser.

Chairman of the ticket sales this year was Mary Humpa. Ticket sales are a very important part of pre-Derby and the day of the Derby. This year, Mary’s committee volunteers for ticket sales at headquarters were Don and Bonnie Letich, Scott Stranczek, Tom Geisler.

The location of the Conservation Cafe changed this year to the tent. The food was served in the “big top” and seating was provided. If you weren’t hungry when you entered the tent, you eventually found yourself buying a hamburger or hot dog. Thank you Marguerite O’Connell and your team for a job well done!

Like the Conservation Cafe, fish judging was held in the tent with head fish judge Mike Venet and his assistant Tony Wos. Every year the state regulations change a bit which keeps our fishermen and us following the rules. This is not always an easy task when you have a fisherman whose big catch is just an 1/8 of an inch shy of being legal.

Children playing games outside with their friends and parents made for some wonderful pictures. Go to our website to see pictures of the egg toss and the sack races. Look carefully, you occasionally see an egg in mid air. Thanks Dale Miller for chairing this event for the kids and families.

Who would think that grownups would have so much fun listening to music while walking on numbered stepping stones during the Beer Walk. Of course, we couldn’t have had music for the Beer Walk if it hadn’t been for Bob Humpa. He not only entertained us all weekend with the variety of music, he also announced hourly fish winners. Thanks Bob for giving us the festival atmosphere. Thanks Ken Golonka for announcing and running speed raffles during the derby.

We can’t forget the fun game of Chicken Poop Bingo. Yes, we did have chickens and what fun it was to watch the chicken decide which numbered square she would choose to be the winning number. Thanks Dale Miller for chairing this fun event. What a thrill for one of the children discovering two fresh laid eggs in the bottom of the cage.

Our derby wraps up with the live auction, which again, was a success this year. Ron Salee and his team of volunteers did a terrific job with the group, order and display of items for auction. Having each item numbered with the description on a placement card made an excellent presentation. Ron’s team included; with Ross Musumeci, Jim Reitimaier, Laura Golonka, Kyle and Corey Salee The famous NICC Auction would not be what it is today without Bob Diemer as our auctioneer. Bob, thank you for your support, auctioneer expertise and many years as our auctioneer.

Thank you to our treasurers, Laura and Ken Golonka and Mary Humpa for keeping tabs on monies coming in during the derby.

The success of the derby is largely due to the continued support or our sponsors – local and national businesses and the many volunteers who worked on committees.

Thank you everyone for making this a wonderful fun and successful derby. The laughter, jokes and smiles on your faces and faces of our guests were priceless and are what makes me look forward to next year’s derby.. Hopefully with ice!

SPRING CLEAN-UP ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY – MAY 6

It’s that time of year again, when NICC volunteers grab their gloves and head for the highway. Have you ever noticed NICC’s name on the two Adopt-A-Highway signs on Grass Lake Road between Rts. 83 & 59? For the past 11 years, NICC has been assigned this stretch of road. We volunteer our time twice a year to clean up that section of highway. All volunteers are asked to meet at Triangle Sports & Marine on Grass Lake Rd. just west of Rt. 83 at 10 a.m. This is a good opportunity to volunteer your 5 hours. If you are interested, please call Bonnie
